چکیده

IRS (infra-red Sounder) is an infra-red Fourier transform spectrometer that will be on board the Meteosat Third Generation series of future EUMETSAT geostationary satellites and have a unique 4D look at atmosphere. After its planned launch in 2024, it able to measure radiance emitted by Earth top atmosphere using 1960 channels two spectral bands between 680 – 1210 cm-1 (long-wave infra-red) 1600 2250 (mid-wave sampling 0.6 cm-1. It perform measurements over full disk with high spatial temporal resolution 4 km nadir 30 minutes Europe. Thus, huge amount data from present challenges, particularly transmission, storage assimilation into NWP models. To reduce volume data, various methods are available including sampling, principal component analysis channel selection. The latter technique discussed this paper proposing general selection provide Numerical Weather Prediction objective improve essential variables for such as temperature, humidity, skin temperature ozone. This work has required development large observation database takes account main developments techniques, use observation-error covariance matrices or ozone global models example. study performs specific sensitivity observations proposes first 300 allows us error troposphere 48% 65% humidity 17%

Numerical Weather Prediction Models

JMA operates NWP models to meet various kinds of requirements on weather forecasting. The suite of the NWP models covers a wide temporal range of forecast periods from a few hours to two seasons providing a seamless sequence of products for the public. The Global Spectral Model (GSM) produces 84-hour forecast four times a day (00, 06, 12, 18 UTC) to support the official short-range forecasting ...

Software Tools and Parallel Computing for Numerical Weather Prediction Models

This paper describes a software environment to facilitate the use of cluster computing for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. It presents an empirical study based on the NCAR/Penn State MM5 model and another mesoscale model developed at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Without appropriate tools, it is tedious and difficult to work with the legacy codes for NWP models. W...

Review of numerical methods for nonhydrostatic weather prediction models

Currently available computer power allows to run operational numerical weather prediction models at resolutions higher than 10 km. The aim of such high resolution modeling is the prediction of local weather, including orographically induced winds and local precipitation patterns. In this range the hydrostatic approximation is no longer valid and nonhydrostatic models have to be used instead. Fo...

WindSat polarimetric microwave observations improve southern hemisphere numerical weather prediction

WindSat was launched in 2003 and is the first satellite-borne fully polarimetric microwave radiometer (Gaiser et al. 2004). This is an early report indicating the potential benefit of polarimetric microwave observations from this instrument. Initial studies examining the impact of WindSat polarimetric microwave observations when assimilated into a version of the National Centers for Environment...

Advanced Numerical Methods for Numerical Weather Prediction

The long term goal of this research is to explore new numerical methods for the next generation global atmospheric model. The reason for considering new methods is due to the paradigm shift in high performance computing from vector computers to distributed memory machines. To take full advantage of the new architectures the global domain must now be partitioned into subdomains/ elements that ca...
